The big buzz in 2013 was all about smart refrigerators like the LFX31995ST from LG that claim to streamline your food management with apps for only $3499.99. This could be considered overkill just because there are so many other places and devices where you can check your Google calendar or look at the weather. 2014 heralded in an age of appliances with lots of bells and whistles that actually had to do with food prep and refrigeration.

5. Samsung RSG309AARS

If you really feel the need to get a Wi-Fi fridge then try out Samsung models first. This has an MSRP of $2499 which basically saves you $1000 over models from LG. The LFX31995ST from LG had lots of complaints about the apps being clunky or useless but buyers liked the fridge overall. It seemed that many people would get the refrigerator home and realize they didn’t need the extra features but the appliance itself is pretty solid.

With this Samsung model though the reviewers were using the apps a lot more. It also comes with a Pandora app and speakers. Sure, this is overkill but it is still more reasonably priced compared to other appliances with apps that aren’t as well known or used as often.

4. Samsung RF31FMESBSR

On the outside this looks like a typical stainless steel French Door refrigerator and you may be wondering why the MSRP is pretty high at $3,699. The overall features and usability is what earns this refrigerator a spot on the list.

It claims to hold about 31 grocery bags in it’s 31 cubic feet. It uses the Twin Cooling Plus®, Counter-Height FlexZone™ Drawer, and LED lights that many Samsung models come with.

The main feature that sets this refrigerator apart is that it has a sparkling water dispenser from SodaStream. You can also use still water. This does add to the overall maintenance cost as you will have to buy carbonators separately. Plus, the IceMaster system will help those drinks stay cool.

The SodaStream shouldn’t be the main reason you buy this refrigerator as you can get a countertop version for around $100. However, it is one of the few add-on’s to appliances this year that is actually useful and it does save you some countertop space.

3. GE ABE20EGEBS

You may be feeling frustrated with all of the new technology available and you just want a simple refrigerator. The GE Artistry™ Series came out in the later part of 2013.

The concept comes from Tomas DeLuna who is 27 years old and wanted an appliance that would be accessible pricewise for younger home owners. He basically just wanted you to have to decide between having an optional icemaker and whether you wanted black or white. Since it has a retro style usually these refrigerators also come in brighter color options. This would be more difficult to match with your existing appliances but it would be nice to see colorful appliances at a lower price point.

There won’t be as high of a learning curve with this appliance as opposed to most of the other new releases. Instead of just adding on more things for the sake of something new, it was simplified.

The exterior design is also one of the most affordable retro style refrigerators on the market at $1199. It could also work with a contemporary kitchen too. If you already have white or black high gloss appliances this could coordinate but add more style to the room. Plus, it has a vintage style to it but the convenience of a bottom freezer.

2. GE CFE29TSDSS

The GE Cafe™ has a few models where you can get hot water right from the door. There are four different settings that you can use for soup, tea, cocoa, or just warm water. There are currently only two refrigerators from GE with this feature. The first is the counter depth CYE23TSDSS. The second is the CFE29TSDSS. They both have an MSRP of $3099.

For a new feature that you would probably use everyday or even several times a day if you drink tea this fridge stands out. Some of the apps on smart fridges may look cool in the store but think about how often you would actually use it.

1. Samsung RF32FMQDBSR

You can find the LED lighting, triple cooling system and larger 32 cu. ft. capacity from lots of brands and most of them won’t carry the $3,999 price tag. This refrigerator is special because of the convertible zone. Finally, an innovation for a refrigerator that actually has to do with keeping things cool!

This is a four door refrigerator. The top half is refrigerator space. The lower left quadrant is a freezer. The lower right quadrant can be either. This is useful for those shopping trips when you bring home too much fresh food although you would have to rearrange the food that’s already in there. Reviewers appreciated the four door design for organization instead of a larger drawer that is commonly found on bottom freezer units. It has plenty of five star ratings although there were a few complaints about nose. Ironically the Convertible Zone wasn’t really mentioned in the reviews even though it’s the main reason to choose this over other Samsung models.

There were a lot of new technology additions in 2014 but there were fewer brands who kept them both affordable and practical. GE and Samsung earn top honors for coming up with new ideas for refrigerators that are actually needed.

There are a lot of improvements on refrigerators this year; and some of them you just won’t need. 2014 has brought a lot of improvements to water dispensers which is the most useful addition. There’s also been a price reduction in refrigerators with wi-fi and the retro look has gone more main stream.

In 2013 built-in styles are much more popular than counter depth designs. However, there are fewer built-in styles to choose from and these models tend to be much more expensive while only saving a few extra inches of space. For slightly larger capacities at a cheaper price range look for this style of refrigerator in one of these fashionable finishes.

4. Dacor PF36BNDFBK

There are multiple customization options on the Dacor PF36BNDFBK model. The finish is called Black Glass. You can use a Millenia style handle with the model number AFM36H3. It comes both in chrome and copper. You can also choose AFE36H3B for black handles but the stainless versions will coordinate better with the next accessory.

The design feature that virtually no other line has is the AFM36VSP stainless steel trim kit. This adds vertical stainless edges to the door. If you already have black appliances in your kitchen you may not be that enthusiastic about matching them with a new fridge. This is a dual finish option that will still coordinate. The manufacturer classifies it as cabinet depth instead of counter depth.

3. Bosch B22CS50SNW

Stainless steel is still one of the most popular finishes for 2013 along with panel ready refrigerators. Bosch makes a white refrigerator that doesn’t look outdated. Some panel ready designs use flat fronts and larger handles to look more like cabinetry. This model mimics the same look for a lot less and it has a water dispenser. Instead of a shiny pebbled finish that is so common in this color the brand chose a smooth flat finish.

The stainless steel handles and water dispenser also make it more modern for 2013. It updates both the color and the side by side style.

2. Fisher&Paykel Bottom Freezer RF175WDRUX1

Design wise the big difference between a built in style fridge and a counter depth version is that the counter-depth version will still jut out a little bit. For many homeowners this small design inconvenience could be worth the savings. However, it will interrupt the look of your cabinetry.

Fisher Paykel has a narrower and shallow handle that is classified as standard. It mimics a lot of the popular tubular cabinetry pulls that will lead to a more cohesive look. The handle design reminds me of more expensive sub-zero refrigerators.

Even the water dispenser caters towards small spaces with the Slimline control panel. You can also change the angle of the spout to fill different sizes of pitchers and glasses.

The cabinet color is gray instead of the traditional black tone. The retailers refer to it as gray while the manufacturer calls it “Silver Prepainted”. Gray is a common kitchen cabinet color for 2013 so it’s nice to have appliances that will match this style while still blending in with the stainless steel front.

1. Summit CP171SS

The reviewers seemed to classify this fridge as both tall and narrow. Reviewers also stated that it was perfect for a galley style kitchen. Summit classifies the door as stainless steel with platinum sides. It has 12 cubic feet of capacity but the interior has an effective layout of 3 freezer drawers while some larger capacities only have two.

The handles are the most unique design feature. Since this will most likely be used in small kitchens and apartments it’s nice to not have the typical pull style handle. These triangular shapes are modern but more interesting than the typical recessed design.

Summit realizes that this style of fridge is for people who need to save some space in their kitchen. It could also work in a guest space, carriage house, or a basement apartment where you don’t even have a full kitchen. This is why it wins first place.

Counter-depth trends for 2013 will use stainless steel fronts. Find custom handles or tubular versions to match your cabinetry.

4. GE Monogram ZIRS360NXRH

Large built-in refrigerators are popular for 2013. Interiors by Cary Vogel actually uses a stainless steel front in this design. This makes it the best for contemporary or traditional spaces.

This Monogram built-in is one of the more expensive ones offered from GE at $6799. It has a 21.5 cubic feet of capacity. The ZIRS360NXRH model number is for the right hinge. ZIRS360NXLH is for the left hinge. The interior has more snack drawers and crispers than you would usually find but they aren’t very deep because of the counter-depth layout of the fridge.

3. Miele 36″

A fully integrated refrigerator is perfect for contemporary kitchens. The designer states that it is a 36″ refrigerator but doesn’t give the model number. Miele offers their freezerless models in both stainless steel and with custom panels.

You could pair this type of refrigerator with an all freezer column, which is a popular kitchen design trend in 2013. By doing so you essentially provide a larger capacity appliance that is available otherwise. You could also go with two refrigerators next to each other which wouldn’t be available in a traditional appliance. Miele won the Good Design award.

The model numbers are as follows:

There is a lot of technology in this one such as MasterCool™, ClearView™, Drop and Lock™, SmartFresh™, and FullView™. There are similar functions in most other brands but there are also some features that set this Miele refrigerator apart.

My favorite feature is part of the Independence™ line. In 2013 you’ll find a lot of technology built right into the refrigerator such as RemoteVisionTM. It uses Miele software and a WLAN which is monitored by a service center. Client service will call you if the temperature drops enough to become a problem. This eliminates horror stories you often hear of coming home from a vacation to find a non-functioning appliance and lots of spoiled food.

To keep the design more classic and traditional use molding on top and go with a custom panel design instead of stainless steel. Mimic the look of the rest of your cabinets. The larger size makes it appear more like a pantry.

2. Sub-Zero 27″ All Refrigerator 700TR

Many designers are inventing ways to make refrigerators look like an armoire this year and this is a good fridge for that style. Most freezerless designs will be in a side by side style but this one is more of a French door look when two are paired together.

The 700TR is divided on the bottom so that it has two drawers. This will make it more like an armoire. You can choose between wood panels and stainless steel ones. Plus, there are tubular or pro handles. Sub-Zero also bills this as a tall refrigerator at 80″ which is important if you want it to look like an armoire.

This style is more versatile than you may think. An armoire replica probably draws up visions of a large French piece with lots of intricate woodwork but a flat custom panel as shown here is perfectly at home in a contemporary kitchen. It looks more like a cabinet instead of an appliance so the dual level island gets more attention.

1. Thermador Freedom Columns T30IR800SP

Integrating appliances into the appearance of a pantry is another trendy concept this year. For this look, a skinnier refrigerator is required. Most of the other models will only work in large kitchens. Using columns shows the classic configuration of a freezer and fridge next to each other.

A lot of modern refrigerators just won’t fit in vintage style homes and so these smaller columns can be used to fit the space. Here Chicago Kitchen and Bath have used a 30″ refrigerator and 24″ freezer. Not only are their widths different, they are even covered in different colors of panels.

Thermador allows you to customize the width you need in 18″, 24″, 30″ or 36″. There are also professional or Masterpiece handles. It’s also billed as a tall model. The flush installation is made possible by the Freedom® hinge. Plus, the door panel is designer to hide the vent. This is why the icebox style design pictured above works, and why the Thermador Freedom Columns get our nod for the best refrigerator in the freezerless design category.

In many celebrity kitchens you’ll find a wall of refrigerators, or at least two of these appliances. It’s a concept that would work well for families. Use a freezerless design to supplement your existing refrigerator or just to get the right freezer/fridge ratio for your family.

What are the best refrigerators you can buy in 2013? We take a look at 5 of the most deserving refrigerators and pick a winner based on price, features, looks, and energy efficiency!

The best refrigerators on the market today are a weird mix of old and new. There’s a refrigerator that isn’t quite out yet, but obviously deserves to be on this list. There’s a fridge that looks like it was released 60 years ago. Then there’s others that have been around a couple years. Perhaps the strangest development in 2013 is that the best new innovation in refrigeration isn’t about how a fridge cools, but how it heats!

Here I’ve put together my top 5 best refrigerators for 2013.

#5 – T9000 from Samsung

The Samsung T9000 hasn’t hit the market yet, but it is slated to soon. This refrigerator really created quite a stir at CES in Las Vegas earlier this year. Armed with an Android LCD screen with Evernote capability, this is definitely one of the more feature-rich appliances you’ll find in 2013. You’ll find most of the other features you’d expect on a high-end french door refrigerator to go along with the flashy LCD screen. Dual evaporators, dual compressors, LED lighting, temperature and humidity controlled drawers, as well as tempered glass shelves that slide out and guard against spills.

Perhaps even more interesting than the LCD is the 4 door design that allows for a seperate 6.5 cubic foot compartment which can be set to a custom temperature. This means it can be used for fresh or frozen food, whichever you need more room for. That is a great idea in my estimation, and allows for a lot of flexibility for those who like to stock up the freezer once a month, and then end up with an empty freezer and lots of left-overs by the end of the month.

Not everything is known about this fridge yet though. Energy efficiency hasn’t been made public yet, and dimensions are still somewhat of a guessing game. There is a T9000 model which has been available in Korea for almost a year now, but whether the one for US markets will be significantly different or not hasn’t been made clear yet. It’s estimated MSRP is about $4000, which isn’t too outrageous when you put it up against other top-of-the-line models which can extend into 5 figure territory. By fitting just about every feature you can think of into the T9000, and doing it for a (relatively) low price, Samsung has assured this fridge a top 5 ranking. The price is just a bit too high to warrant moving it higher with all the remaining unknowns though.

#4 – Elmira Northstar 1950

One of the more interesting developments in refrigerator designs on the market today are how many retro styled refrigerators there are. You don’t often see them from major name brands, but there are countless less well-known names out there offering modern refrigerators with a vintage look. Elmira is one of these brands, and their model 1950 is one of my favorite refrigerators from a visual standpoint.

Retro refrigerators often still look a bit too modern in their styling, and instead rely on bright color schemes and lots of chrome to give a vintage feel to the appliance. The 1950 from Elmira Northstar actually looks straight out of 1950 though, and it’s a great look! The enamel finish is beautiful, and the sides get the same treatment as the front. Even in a muted color like white, the Elmira Northstar 1950 will be the centerpiece of any kitchen it graces.

The feature set on retro refrigerators is usually lacking a bit of course. You won’t find water or ice dispensers in the door naturally, as that would ruin the look. The 1950 is somewhat of an anomaly though in that it does have some very interesting features in the interior. The shelving, lighting, and drawers are high quality. There’s gallon door bins. You can opt for an ice-maker even. Energy efficiency isn’t anything special, at 448 kWh per year.

Prices are generally much higher with retro refrigerators, and the 1950 is no exception with a MSRP of $4195. But with such a beautiful vintage look, it can justify such a price-tag even though it’s not an especially large fridge at just 18.5 cubic feet of capacity.

#3 – Sub-Zero Pro 48

Sub-Zero makes some great refrigerators, and the Pro 48 may be the best of the bunch. This is the go-to refrigerator for kitchen designers and anyone looking for a top-of-the-line built-in refrigerator. Available in stainless or custom panel finishes, and even with a freestanding option using their kit, this refrigerator can go with any style of decor.

The looks aren’t all there is to this fridge either. Sub-Zero’s engineering is unsurpassed. The materials used are top-flight. The capacity is very large for what amounts to a counter-depth refrigerator, as you’d expect from a 48″ wide fridge.

As with all Sub Zero refrigerators though, price is the sticking point. You get what you pay for, which in this case is one of the most expensive refrigerators you can buy. As much as the Sub Zero Pro 48 justifies that cost, it’s just a bit too high to allow it any further up my list of 2013′s best refrigerators.

#2 – LG LFX28991ST

If I was in the market for a refrigerator, this is probably the one I’d buy. Yah, it isn’t the flashiest, it doesn’t do anything new, but it does a whole lot and without a premium pricetag. The MSRP is $2999, which makes it the lowest priced refrigerator on this list … and it’s street price is far less than that. LG doesn’t skimp on features with the LFX28991ST to hit that price-point though. You get premium LED lighting, dual compressors, a stainless finish, and just about everything else you’d expect to find on a high-end french door refrigerator.

That isn’t why I’d buy it though. Not only will you save money up-front when you buy it, but the LFX28991ST is actually the most energy efficient french door refrigerator on the market today. Even though top freezers tend to be more efficient than other configurations, the LG LFX28991ST beats every single one of them from a major brand. Only some specialty refrigerators from obscure brands can boast better energy efficiency, and none of them would actually look good in a kitchen.

However, since the LG in this case doesn’t do anything else particularly special I can’t bring myself to give it the top spot. The fact that the stainless finish is the only one available makes it a bit easier for me to drop it to #2 as well. If LG had given us more options in color, I might have had to reconsider. In any case, the LFX28991ST is the one to buy. On the other hand, the fridge to “ooh” and “ahh” at is …

#1 – GE Café™ CFE29TSDSS

The T9000 and it’s high-tech Android LCD have to take a back-seat to another innovation in refrigeration. This refrigerator from GE adds a hot water dispenser to the ice and water dispenser you find on most modern refrigerators. In my opinion that addition has been long-overdue for refrigerators. It’s very common to find hot water heaters on water dispensers that cost as little as $20, so why it’s taken so long for a well-known refrigerator brand to introduce such technology is beyond me.

With the GE CFE29TSDSS you no longer need to heat water in the microwave or on the stove for many applications. There are pre-set temperatures for common uses of hot water, such as making tea or soup. You can dial in whatever temperature you want in the allowed range by using the custom setting. Boiling water isn’t allowed though, for safety reasons. The other safety feature is the nob used to dispense hot water needs to be depressed and then turned.

The one complaint I have with this fridge is the price. The MSRP at $3000 is a bit high. Of course you can find it in stores for significantly less already, and so that’s not such a big deal. In every other way the GE CFE29TSDSS is a great refrigerator. The looks, the features, it’s all there. Add in the most useful new addition to refrigeration, and you have the best refrigerator for 2013 in this author’s opinion!

Retro and vintage styles are back in for 2013. With a retro fridge you don’t have to give up on modern efficiency or features either. Here are some of our favorite retro refrigerators that can bring that vintage look to your kitchen in 2013.

To really have a current kitchen design this year look to the past for nostalgic appliances. While it’s the hottest look this year design with it carefully. You’re probably going to have these appliances for five years or longer. Here is a design guide to get in on the biggest design craze of 2013 that will still work in 2014 and beyond.

4. Sub-Zero BI-48S

All of the other refrigerators pictured are very evocative of the vintage style with rounded edges and chrome detailing. Usually this model of side by side would be very contemporary looking. However, the fact that it’s a built-in and a side by side gives some very interesting options for paneling.

Amazing Spaces uses a chalkboard front that compliments the industrial schoolhouse style barstools. Schoolhouse lights are also popular in 2013 as pendants for kitchen design. Get a larger capacity by going with a more modern fridge and a more convenient configuration for organization.

When using a panel ready style you’ll need to go with an obvious retro color. This includes red and turquoise. When you’re sick of this look if all of the cabinetry and chalkboard inserts were painted white you’d have a very classic looking kitchen. The other appliance options listed will always feel vintage while this one is much easier to transform.

3. Elmira Northstar 1950

To truly get a retro design you’re going to need to go with a top freezer style. Elmira has pulled off a more modern freezer style because of the handles. It has an 18.5 capacity and the enamel sides are color matched. It uses high gloss doors which are also imperative for a 1950s or 1960s feel.

This photo is also a good depiction of how to assemble an entire appliance suite. Don’t use a bold color throughout. You may have one vintage piece like a stove that is impossible to match on the rest of your appliances. Pair the new and the old together to get a more energy efficient kitchen that is more neutral. In the era these were made it was most likely designed as a set but now a mix and match style is more popular. The rest of the kitchen is neutral with slight rustic touches like beadboard cabinet fronts and farmhouse style lighting.

2. SMEG FAB30VS7

Showcase not only the trendiest style but also one of the trendiest colors for 2013. Mint is an obsession in both fashion and decor this year and this pastel green fridge is the closest you will come to finding it for appliances. The FAB30VS7 even has a wine rack and two egg trays inside. It’s a lower capacity refrigerator, more suited to smaller kitchens or apartments.

I would use it in an all white kitchen with a farmhouse feel. Pair it with other white appliances and a black and white checkerboard floor tile.

1. Elmira Stove Works 1958/1959

You will usually find vintage and retro refrigerators with smaller capacity than their contemporary looking counterparts. It’s nice to see dimensions that will fit in smaller rooms but these retro refrigerators almost exclusively cater to those who need smaller friges. What if you have a family or you cook a lot? Do you just miss out on this look completely?

Elmira offers a French door design that is pretty rare to find in this look. In their 1958 and 1959 models you’ll find the iconic chrome trim that you would expect from this era. These models are available in Candy Red and even have an icemaker inside. The 1958 model has 24.8 cu. ft. and the 1959 model has 19.8 cu. ft. They both have a Visi-shelving system inside.

The most popular fridges for 2013 will look like they are from the 1950s or 1960s. They will either use a dramatic bold color like red, or a very contoured silhouette with an enamel style finish. However, with retro refrigerators you can have modern conveniences like good energy efficiency or a deli drawer to go along with the great look!

A counter depth fridge from the 500 series with the model number B22CS50SNW is right on trend for 2013. This refrigerator doesn’t have a lot of contouring on the door. Most white or black appliances will have custom panels but this one is still current. It has stainless accents on the handles and the icemaker instead of being color matched.

3. Viking VCSB

Usually when adding a panel to a refrigerator you deal with a cabinet maker instead of the manufacturer. With this refrigerator you have lots of options. It’s rare to find a red or blue refrigerator but this one has two of each. You may pay slightly more for the custom colors. I think the gray tones are interesting if you don’t want to deal with cleaning stainless all the time. The other tones are pretty modern and bold.

2. Liebherr SBS 246

This Liebherr refrigerator has five different temperature zones and three BioFresh safes. It’s illuminated by LEDs on the interior. It can hold 34 wine bottles and there is glass over this zone. Since the freezer is only 4.5 cu. ft. though it may not suit how everyone shops.

1. Northland 48SS-SGX

This is a stainless steel wrap fridge but it’s unique in that it has a full length glass door. Usually glass doors are on French door styles. Since there are drawers underneath there will just be a small fraction of glass on the upper door. The side by side glass door is long and elegant in comparison. The capacity of the Northland fridge is fairly large at 30.3 as well.

It’s nice to see that the side by side configuration is becoming popular again. Most of the popular models for 2013 feature a built-in design and glass doors or unique handles.

A short review that we still need to flesh out more. This is just a list of the top 3 most efficient “all refrigerator” models on the market today. “All refrigerators” are those which don’t have a freezer, and are often called “freezerless” or can be referred to as a fresh food column. The LG LFX28991ST may be the best overall refrigerator on the market today. It made an appearance on the list of most efficient french door refrigerators, and actually took the top prize there. The best part about it is that to grab the title LG didn’t have to skimp or charge an arm and a leg. The price is rather mid-range for stainless french door models, while the fridge is loaded with features. Well done LG!

Here is another review of a Sub Zero model. In this case, it’s the PRO 48, which is actually two models. The 648PRO and 648PROG. The difference is the “G” model has a glass door. Emily covers some beautiful and elegant kitchens which utilize these models to create a stunning effect. Certainly a must read (or at least, must look at) for those who are in the market for a top of the line refrigerator, or even just planning a remodel of their kitchen.

Kitchens Unlimited doesn’t state that this fridge is the exact one used but a commenter on Houzz.com suggests it is the model used. This room is filled with very subtle details that you notice the more you look at it. Almost everything in the kitchen has a special nuance to it like the three pendant lights over the sink or the turquoise island.

The glass door model (648PROG) fits in well here because while it appears neutral with the stainless front, the glass door gets noticed upon closer inspection.

Gray Kitchen Design

Either Sub-Zero model would’ve worked in this more contemporary design by East End Country Kitchens. Notice that the cupboards above the refrigerator actually have glass in them which would’ve coordinated with the PROG model. However, there is already so much going on this room from the oversized lighting to the Bertoia barstools and the Big Bang XL Foscarini light that the plainer fridge is a smart choice.

The star of the room is the stained gray wood cabinets. If it was just a painted cabinet in the same color than the appliances would’ve been featured more.

A Pro 48 with Farmhouse Style

The French door style and double freezer can have almost a vintage flair to it, even in a metallic finish. What’s really interesting about this kitchen are the competing metal tones. Instead of choosing more of a farmhouse style appliance with a custom panel, stainless is paired against a copper range hood.

Since the cooper is aged it coordinates with the wood beams better.

Price of Sub Zero Pro 48

The price is similar regardless of the door style you choose. The glass door model has an MSRP of $15,970. The door is supposed to resist UV rays. The stainless version also shares the same MSRP.

Charming Country Kitchen

Traditional Kitchen by Truckee Architect Ward-Young Architecture & Planning

Stainless steel isn’t a typical choice for a rustic room but Ward-Young Architecture & Planning pulls it off in this kitchen. The barn wood on the walls has some gray tones as does the distressed metal backsplash and table. The glass door showcases food which is a common decorative accessory as evidenced by the eggs on the island.

All of the competing finishes and textures would probably be too much in this room without the more modern stainless finish. Plus, the red vintage style stove and range hood would be next to impossible to replicate on a refrigerator but again the stainless accents still coordinate with it.

Industrial Style with Freestanding Fridge

Traditional Kitchen by Other Metro Sub-Zero and Wolf

Typically you would find glass doors for sale on commercial style appliances but they are popular for home use now too. Use the glass door style in an industrial kitchen with subway tile walls, open shelves, and metal barstools. Add in warm touches with floral arrangements and red knobs on a Wolf Dual Fuel range.

This style of kitchen showcases the appliances the most because of the simpler color palettes and materials.

There are both traditional and farmhouse elements again in this design which makes it perfect for 2013. This kitchen uses a lot of open space. Most of the cabinetry and appliances are tucked away in arched niches adding to the airy appearance. The glass door fridge gives the same feeling to this room.

When spending so much money on a refrigerator you want to get one that will appeal to home buyers in case at some point in the future if you decide to sell your home. Even if the kitchen design or becomes dated the Sub-Zero Pro 48 can coordinate with a lot of other design visions or plans which makes it a timeless choice.

The top freezer style is one where designers and actual homeowners differ a lot. It rarely shows up in the design magazines for 2013. However, it’s the best for small kitchens, small budgets, and traditional layouts. Luckily, a few brands are taking these standard fridge configurations and making it into an appliance that actually looks cool.

Stainless steel is still a popular finish for 2013 but designers and homeowners alike are recognizing that it has its flaws. The Satina® finish on this Whirlpool fridge attempts to work around this. You can still use magnets and it’s supposed to be fingerprint resistant. It also looks modern because of the cup handles and the contoured door.

4. Whirlpool WRT771RWYM

You will want to find unique handles to be current this year. This isn’t typically available on top freezers. However, Whirlpool does have some cool alternative. Much more expensive appliances will use custom panel doors along with custom handles. While this isn’t typically offered in this configuration instead look for recessed or curved handles to mimic a similar concept.

It even has a water dispenser inside. It has a full width pantry drawer. For the $1349 MSRP you get lots of added technology like 6th Sense®, FreshFlow™ air filter, PUR® water filter, and SpillMizer™ shelves.

3. LG LTN16385PL

Looking at this refrigerator you would probably guess that the MSRP is pretty high because it’s so unique. However, it’s only $699 which is probably because it’s only 16 cu. feet. It may look like stainless steel but it’s actually platinum. The best feature of this one is the curved Bolivar handle.

There are some pretty basic interior elements on this one. The interior design has premium features like LED lighting. Also it uses one large crisper drawer instead of two typical smaller ones.

2. Whirlpool WRT771REYB

The exterior design of this Whirlpool Gold® fridge uses a lot of elements that are appearing on much more expensive appliances. The hinges are hidden and the doors are contoured. It also has a smooth finish. The handles are integrated but the design is different. Usually these will face more towards the side of the fridge so this is an added design element.

The standout piece of this 21.2 cubic ft. model is the exterior water dispenser. It uses a Pur® water and ice filter. The MSRP is $1249 which makes it quite affordable for having a water dispenser.

It has one of the best designs for organization of any top freezer too. The interior design uses SpillMizer™ shelves and humidity technology for the crispers. It even has a glass compartment in the freezer which is a unique touch. It also has a full width panty drawer and Tilt-n-Go bins.

1. Samsung RT81DTBSP

The top pick in design is this energy saving slim design from Samsung. The first thing that catches the eye is the control panel on the freezer where you can change the temperature.

The biggest feature though is the external water dispenser. It’s even in a slim design. This feature rarely shows up on top freezer styles so you may have had to go with a different configuration in the past if this was important to you.

You will want to note the height of the water dispenser though. On other side by side models parents complain that their kids can’t reach the water dispenser and on other models parents complain that their kids can reach the water dispenser. It depends on the family.

The interior also has some cool design features such as LED lighting. The tempered glass shelves even have metallic edges. The exterior display uses a blue digital LED lighting.

For a top freezer that is actually trendy in 2013 you will want to find unusual handles and exaggerated door contours. Stainless steel is the most popular finish but a black or white will still work if it is in a smooth or matte finish.

Bottom freezer style refrigerators are just as popular as French Door ones in 2013. This wasn’t the case in 2011 or 2012. It is good news for homeowners who have smaller kitchens or just don’t have as much money to spend. From a design standpoint there are some very exciting options that will integrate with the popular themes for 2013.

5. Sub-Zero BI-36UG

From a pure design standpoint this Sub-Zero over-and-under style with flush installation is one of the trendiest. However, with an MSRP of $9175-$10285 it just isn’t practical for most families to buy. The overlay style (BI-36UG/O) is the cheaper and the classic stainless (BI-36UG/S) is the more expensive one.

This has crisper and deli drawers. However, the glass door design presents some unique challenges. You will mostly find this fridge stocked as it is here with lots of fruit and matching water or soda bottles. Also note that you don’t have all of the storage for mayo and butter in the door like you would with a traditional solid door. With all of its downsides, this is one model that will match virtually any kind of theme or cabinetry color.

4. Fisher & Paykel RF175WDRX1

Counter depth appliances are popular in 2013. Built-in styles are typically a lot trendier than freestanding pieces but you have both options with this refrigerator. It comes in an EZKleen stainless steel finish. Many similar styles will show a bottom freezer door but this exact model number has a full extension bottom freezer drawer. The flat front makes it ideal for any kind of modern or industrial design.

3. Libherr CS1311

The designer doesn’t state whether this is the CS1311 or the CS1360. The overall concept is for a small apartment with a slimline handle. The design of this is remarkable because of the different ways you can use this. In 2013 the idea of a butler’s pantry is becoming popular again, either for a second fridge or a first one. These spaces are smaller and so will need more compact appliances. Unlike the other bottom freezers this one has a second door instead of a freezer drawer.

2.Sub-Zero BI30U

This one makes the list for sheer versatility. It has been used in modern kitchens, Tuscan designs, and even classic white kitchens. The overlay style is BI-30U/O and has an MSRP of $7480. The classic stainless style has an MSRP of $9250 with the model number BI-30U/S. While this is a big purchase, if you want the Sub-Zero brand it’s at the bottom end of the price range really.

1. Heartland MODEL HCBMR19L Refrigerator

Heartland is a brand that really typifies the most popular style of 2013 which is the farmhouse look. The bottom freezer configuration is still convenient and modern though. The finish is enamel which is popular on all kitchen items, even cookware. Note that it’s nickel trim so it might not match other stainless steel appliances exactly.

The designer never states what the fridge model is, but the HCBMR19L from the Classic line is close if not the exact model pictured. Vintage style stoves from Heartland are popular this year but getting a matching refrigerator isn’t always that easy. There are some modern conveniences like humidity crispers and pull out freezer basics.
